Northern Lights or Detroit Lights?

Wednesday, October 29, 2003 between 10:15 and 11:00 PM

Heavy sunspot activity caused a forecast of a brilliant Norther Light display on October 29th. That prediction prompted the following photos.

Both photos were taken from the Perry's Monument veranda, looking due north. The ground lights on the right side of the picture are on Middle Bass Island and the left side lights are on Rattlesnake Island. (The horizontal light streak on the lower left side of the first picture is the seawall across the road from the Monument.)

The second picture, although a different photo, is a closer view the approximate area inside the box on the first photo.

Both pictures were made with a digital camera set to ASA 400, f3.5 and for 10 seconds.
